Huntsville’s unseasonable spring-like weather came to a fitting end today as the annual Coldest Night of the Year walk got underway.

The national event raises funds for the hungry, hurting and homeless in communities across Canada. In Huntsville, it’s the largest annual fundraiser for The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation. By the start of tonight’s walk, participants had raised $19,653 online with more to trickle in over the next few weeks. The team that raised the highest amount was lead sponsor MBRP’s Exhausted Walkers with $3,320; Councillor Jason Fitzgerald raised the most individually with $2,035.

This isn’t the first time Councillor Jason Fitzgerald has participated in the walk – he says The Table provides an important service for Huntsville. “I think a lot of people don’t realize how many people need (The Table’s) help in this community. I appreciate everyone’s generosity in supporting me. I love where I live, it’s a great place to be and anything you can do to be involved in your community and help out is a good thing. I’ll do it again next year. It’s a worthy cause.”
